In stock market technical analysis, support and resistance are certain predetermined levels of the price of a security at which it is thought that the price will tend to stop and reverse. These levels are denoted by multiple touches of price without a breakthrough of the level. Trading ranges can play an important role in determining whether support and resistance function as turning points or continuation patterns. A trading range is a period of time when prices move within a relatively tight range. This signals that the forces of supply and demand are evenly balanced. There are many different ways to identify these levels and to apply them in trading. The higher the timeframe, the more relevant the levels become.
