Cape index meteorology
The K Index is primarily applicable in the prediction of air mass thunderstorms. Low values of the K Index in the presence of other strong thunderstorms indicators (sharp trough, high level jet, etc.) may suggest a severe thunderstorm potential. For example, a low K value might result from a 700 mb dry tongue. CAPE Convective Available Potential Energy. A measure of the amount of energy available for convection. CAPE is directly related to the maximum potential vertical speed within an updraft; thus, higher values indicate greater potential for severe weather. *Severe weather hodograph: veering, strong sfc to 850 directional shear * >100 J/kg negative buoyancy is significant *Good match: BRN 20 and CAPE >2,000 J/kg *Strong cap when > 2 degrees Celsius *Study depth of moisture, TT unreasonable when low level moisture is lacking *KI used for heavy convective rain, values vary with location/season CAPE Convective Available Potential Energy. These forecast images are show the RAP (Rapid Refresh) forecast for up to 6 hours from now. We process the data using the same routines used by the SFCOA system, resulting in a consistent set of images. Know what's coming with AccuWeather's extended daily forecasts for Cape May, NJ. Up to 90 days of daily highs, lows, and precipitation chances. 4. Pitfalls: a. TT does not assess wind shear and CAPE directly. See CAPE and shear environment to see how relevant index is for severe storms. b. May not pick up a capping inversion that prevents storms from developing. c. Index will be too stable if a layer of moisture is just under the 850 mb level. Get your 3-Day weather forecast for Cape May, NJ. Hi/Low, RealFeel, precip, radar, & everything you need to be ready for the day, commute, and weekend! Shiller PE ratio for the S&P 500. Price earnings ratio is based on average inflation-adjusted earnings from the previous 10 years, known as the Cyclically Adjusted PE Ratio (CAPE Ratio), Shiller PE Ratio, or PE 10 — FAQ. ** Layer Cape = Layer Average Quotient X gravity X 1500 m ***Total CAPE = Add all the values above Once you have complete Table 2, you simply sum the values in the fifth column to obtain your estimate of CAPE for the sounding. It's going to be an underestimate because we used values for levels instead of layer averages.

Believe it or not, CAPE in a meteorological sense is not a measure of if the can be factored into other forecasting products, such as the daily tornadic index.
