The use of control charts in the clinical laboratory

The use of Control Charts in the Clinical Laboratory* Stanley Levey, Ph.D. From the Departments oj Physiological Chemistry and Pathology, Wayne University College of Medicine, and Receiving Hospital, Detroit, Michigan Directions are given for the construction of control charts for clinical laboratories. Analysis of variance is applied to the results of the basic research, and if necessary a trend test is also used. The limits on the control charts (average chart and range chart) are based on the statistical analysis. CONTROL CHARTS IN THE CLINICAL LABORATORY 433 CONSTRUCTION OF THE CONTROL CHARTS On the control chart the probability of the results of a control series of a given length is expressed. The time is given on the horizontal axis and the vertical axis shows the parameter concerned.

What is Quality Control? Quality control in the medical laboratory is a statistical process used to monitor and evaluate the analytical process that produces patient results. When a diagnostic test is performed in the medical laboratory, the outcome of the test is a result. The result may be a patient result or it may be a quality control (QC) result.
